THE STORY
Long before Patchouli became one of perfumery's most recognizable notes, its fragrant leaves traveled quietly alongside some of the world's most treasured textiles. Dried Patchouli was tucked among fine cashmere shawls and silks as they journeyed from India to Europe, where its distinctive aroma helped protect valuable fabrics from insects during months at sea. Over time, the scent itself became a mark of authenticiy, and merchants recognized that a genuine imported shawl was often accompanied by the unmistable fragrance of Patchouli. As demand for these luxurious textiles grew throughout Europe during the nineteenth century, Patchouli became closely associated with the romance and mystery of distant lands. Its connection to Indian craftsmanship and their celebrated shawls captivated collectors and aristocrats alike.
By the 19th century, perfumers had embraced Patchouli for different reasons. Its remarkable depth, logevity, and ability to support other aromatic materials as a shapeshifter established it as one of the great foundation notes in perfumery. Complex, enduring, and remarkably versatile, Patchouli continues to bridge worlds, carrying with it a history that stretches from the textile markets of India to the finest fragrance compositions today.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
- For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
- Drug interaction, may inhibit blood clotting; avoid use in the case of anticoagulant medication, major surgery, peptic ulcer, hemophilia, other bleeding disorders (Tisserand, Robert and Rodney Young. Essential Oil Safety, 2nd ed., 2014)
- If essential oils come into unwanted contact with skin or mucous membranes, a traditional method for mitigating this is to douse the area in a fatty/carrier oil. Common kitchen oils like olive oil are effective. Essential oils are lipophilic, meaning they love oils and fats. This is why they are drawn to the fatty/carrier oil. They are also hydrophobic, meaning they hate water. For this reason, putting water on the skin will push the essential oil further into the skin.
